I just caught myself what-if-ing!

At least I can laugh about it. I just caught myself in a long thought process of what-ifs. Not good what-ifs, either. I realized I had relaxed my mind and just let it go where it wanted to go and it chose Avenue What If!

Once I recognized what I was doing, I immediately reversed everything. I took every negative and scary what-if and turned it into the opposite positive one. I don't know anyone who doesn't do this from time to time. The trick is to catch ourselves quickly and turn it around. If we don't do that, we run the risk of making ourselves miserable over things that might or might not even happen.

This shows me once again how important it is to stay conscious of my thoughts. There's nothing wrong with considering all outcomes of any situation and being prepared for possible negative ones. Done consciously and deliberately, this can be helpful. However, letting the mind ruminate over possible negative outcomes like a cow chewing its cud is not helpful to anyone - least of all ourselves.
