What if instead of seeing our challenges and difficulties as something to be endured and conquered as quickly as possible, we saw them as initiations? What if that financial difficulty, that health challenge, that relationship issue is your soul wanting to move you to the next level of growth and experience?
As much as people like to romanticize the idea of initiations, they are anything but romantic. Being initiated into a new level of understanding, a new level of beingness, is difficult. It requires all our past skills and life experiences to support us.
In movies, we think it is great when our hero or heroine faces great difficulty and succeeds. But when we're faced with difficulty we whine and ask, "Why me? What did I do wrong that I have to tackle these problems?" What if the problems are signs we've done everything right? What if our troubles are beckoning us to a new level of spiritual growth and experiences?
I'm going on retreat today and will sit with these questions to see what bubbles up.
