You're no spring chicken!

For reasons unknown, these words from my mother were floating in my mind yesterday. When I reached my late twenties and remained unmarried, my mother starting saying to me, "You have to remember: you're no spring chicken!" What she meant was the older I got the less appeal I would have as marriage material. At the time, I would just shrug it off and go about my business. Now, I think it's funny.

She meant well. She wanted me to be happy. She feared I would remain unmarried, a fate worse than death. Now when I think about it, I wonder where that expression came from. Didn't spring chickens end up in the frying pan? Is being a spring chicken a good thing? Is it better to be an old stew hen?

I don't know the answers to any of these questions. I just know I'm still not a spring chicken and it is okay with me.
